HISTORY OF NEWPORT NEWS-HAMPTON SECTION NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NEGRO WOMEN, INCORPORATED
The Newport News-Hampton Section of the National Council of Negro Women was organized in 1965 by a group of women leading the charge in making a difference in our communities by helping others. These dynamic women, Estell Worrell, Janet West, Maggie Oliver, Marie Montgomery, Ida Tyson, Martha Smith, Catherine Sydney, Inettie Edwards, Florence Cohen, and Bobbie Wynder, had great influence and came from all walks of life with many great stories. They set out on a pioneered journey based on the beliefs of Mary McLeod Bethune.
In the 80’s the organization strived toward goals that increased community participation and awareness. In 2006, Martha Ayers (deceased), had a vision of helping your high school female students in becoming future leaders in our communities by organizing the Visionaires, the Section’s Youth organization within the section.
The Newport News-Hampton Section continues the mission of making difference in our communities and upholding the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated programs grounded on a foundation of critical concerns known as the NCNW Priorities.
The Core Four are bases of these NCNW Priorities implemented by the Newport News-Hampton Section.
